The Origins of Nervous Systems
Nervous systems appeared after we diverged from sponges about 700 million years ago. It's likely that that is when nervous systems filled first neurons first appeared, still be long before a brain. Then brains appeared, actually like a centralized brain, appeared a couple of separate times along various lineages along that pathway.
