The Uprising in Santa Maria

Balboa learned of a plot being hatched by disgruntled local chieftains. The natives, including Sumaco, created a confederacy to attack Santa Maria and drive out the Spanish. According to stories, it was supposedly told to him by his mistress, Ana Yance. Balboa responded by seizing Ana Yance's brother and tortured him for the details of the uprising. He then went on the offensive, striking out at the plot in Cacicas, killing them, and hundreds of their followers. And thus the plot was crushed before it could come to fruition.
