The Dangers of Having a Single Figure as the Head of the FBI

There was something incredibly dangerous in having a single figure as the head of your you know domestic political law enforcement and intelligence agency for 48 years. Hoover was incredibly careful and effective about keeping the FBI outside of almost all mechanisms of formal accountability. He got to pick his own agents outside of the civil service process he created them in his own vision it was almost like a cult of personality with that he could fire and hire them at will.
