Murdoch's Revision of Eliot's View of Culture
For Eliot, the central problem that literature faces can be traced to liberalism, puritanism, and romanticism. For Murdoch, the ideal vision of liberalism is more accurately reflected by the great 19th century novelists or Shakespeare. With his romantic visionary works praising the value of imagination, we can see Blake as a supporter of Murdoch's liberal vision of art. Such a moral task is one that Murdoch perceives in Eliot's poetry.
