Infrastructure Is Not Invisible Until It Breaks Down

The idea that infrastructure is invisible until it breaks down has become kind of a cliche in the literature. One of the things that I wanted to do with the book was to show that it's actually not invisible to us prior to breaking down. So there's, you know, there are many examples of this and one of one of the reasons that I called the introductory chapter, the paver of modern life is because it's a reference to Baudelaire's essay about modernity and the artist.
