The Persistence of Race in the White North
There's this sort of idea I think kind of woven throughout the early chapters which is that like freedom and equality do not necessarily coexist in ostensibly free states. Even within a state which is a big swath of territory it was sort of patchworky you know so people could put down roots own land maybe form a black community while in other parts white people were going to drive them out. Part of the problem african-americans often faced particularly in these huge swaths of rural land and rural sediments is and urban ones for that matter too.
