You say the defining features of the human condition can all be traced to our ability to stand back from the world, from ourselves. This enables us to plan to think flexibly and inventively rather than simply responding to it passively. Most of this enormous increase in capacity comes from inhibition. Primates have more inhibitory neurons than other mammals, and humans have more than any other primate.
