There is a major disconnect between rapid technological change and quite rigid cultural and social arrangements that will not keep up. Most people in the world still live as part of families and intimate communities which provide them with most of what they need in order to survive. If you lose your family and intimate community, you're dead. Or you have to find a replacement family. This was a situation for hundreds of thousands of years of evolution.
