Barbie was in many ways made in the image of her creator Ruth Handler, a hard working, incredibly powerful and fashionable woman. So while working to expand women's rights, certain segments of feminist thinking at the time felt women's participation in fashion was in direct opposition with their cause. However, we would argue that Barbie is a representation of both.
