CHAPTER

What's Upstream of Attention?

I'm curious how you guys think about this given that you have your own podcast That's quite successful is that all of this is downstream of attention and attention is actually the primary source of legitimacy on the internet. It's fundamentally you have X number of eyeballs looking at for you know, why number of minutes per day so I'd be curious how you Guys think about that Well, I think I broadly agree. There was once a story I think my totally some of this offer but there's one story which broke out like some controversy about some popular actor and I noticed that the same two tweets were posted by him. So when that goes to zero you it's like markets like you've massively

such a profound concept when you start applying into other parts of life I have a slightly different frame and I'm curious how you guys think about this given that you have your own podcast That's quite successful is that all of this is downstream of attention and attention is actually the primary source of legitimacy on the internet And whether you take it as a creator and you have your own audience Substack YouTube whatever or or you're actually talking about the relevance of the platforms like wise Twitter important wise Facebook important It's fundamentally you have X number of eyeballs looking at for you know, why number of minutes per day and so I think that the like general like attention is upstream of everything and and prior to the internet you had Gatekeepers and an unlimited number of institutions condiment Nast matter than 1984 because the internet didn't exist so the cost of publishing and distribution of it measures a lot So when that goes to zero you it's like markets like you've massively increased the amount of liquidity and and now given that these markets aren't as siloed you get to a A point where now it all matters is how much attention you captured whether it's through your podcast or What? And I am curious how you think about that because like to me when we got in an argument with the the folks from DC Sager and Marshall in this about Chuck Todd and it's like people at the DC

But like you know
Speaker 3
like what does it just anyone in Silicon Valley actually care about Chuck Todd like when you're thinking about building the next product or doing a request you think about Chuck Todd now and You know Facebook or Twitter ends up being more disruptive to the political process than whatever interview Chuck Todd is doing and That's that's a function of attention. So I'd be curious how you guys think about that
Speaker 1
Well, I think I broadly agree. I do think that that different kinds of attention like for example Twitter I spent a few years working there one thing episode Twitter is Twitter is super important because it is it's kind of the upstream memetic battleground which said so much of the don't don't downstream I'll give you an example I Don't want to share the exact specifics on air There was once a story I think my totally some of this offer but there's one story which broke out like some controversy about some popular actor and I noticed that the same two tweets
