A lot of the cohorts that are actually being collected for research purposes these days are not people with Parkinson's disease. The core feature pathologically of Parkinson's are Lewy bodies. And the main protein component of Lewy bodies is aggregates of alpha-synuclein. But by the time we get involvement of those parts of the brain that cause motor symptoms, like the substantia nigra, we can already see alpha-syn nuclei elsewhere in the nervous system.
