I have this exercise I've developed for groups I love to do. It asks people to start by identifying an issue of concern to them and the sort of our political universe. And then it gives them a kind of long list of possible personal values things they might care about that explain why they care about these issues. Then comes the harder step, which is when they're asked to say okay well here's a smaller list of shared values that come out of the democratic tradition. The question is like which of these shared values most resonates to you and how do you connect your personal value to that shared value? We don't have a lot of space for that kind of reflection on each other's
