Lacan: In order for the child to meet its desire for another, sometimes they have to go a more circuitous route of identifying with something that they imagine the maternal figure to be interested in. So what the child decides to do is identify with this imaginary object. Here again, we see desire of verging on desire as, because the child is going to say, I also am into smartphones.
