I can see how these two competing traditions could arise as a way for different communities to make sense of this event. You don't necessarily read this as homophobec to read it as deeply, sort of pathologizing to the enslaved lover. The degeneracy here isn't the murder of being attracted to a male sex partner. It's a lack of control. It is uncontrolled lust.
