The first question is, what's the emotional theme of this song? What are you feeling when you're singing it? I've definitely been in a situation plenty of times where I'm writing and I know what I'm feeling by the things I'm putting down. When those lines meet with the right performance and the right arrangement and stuff, that's kind of what I mean. If I respond to the material, that's it. And like, we can have a certain sense of autonomy from anything that feels like it would threaten the quality of the work.
