How Can Your Culture Influence Duty and Honor and Patriotism?

How can your culture impact things like duty and honor and patriotism? I mean, these are all things that most societies would figure out all of cultural ways to encourage. But what cultural carrots and sticks in a given society have evolved in such a way so that there is almost nothing that is above and beyond the call of duty,. where the culture expects, encourages and only approves of a level of sacrifice on the part of every man, woman and child  that most other cultures reserve for their most elite military units.
