Almost everyone in the soviet union agreed, at least in private, that things could not go on as they were. Gobachov's three predecessors had died in office. Even conservative members of the pullet bureau understood some kind of change was necessary. Dina akibova remembers driving through moscow from the airport and seeing posters everywhere proclaiming this new word, paris troike.
