Marx and Engels see it as so critical to identify the proletariat as not only the beneficiaries of the coming communist revolution, but also its protagonists. They write that a key feature of capitalism is that quote, what the bourgeoisie produces above all are its own grave diggers. And I think what's key here is that they emphasize that it will be the self activity of the oppressed as it comes into into collective consciousness of its position in historical role. It will be that force that overthrows the capitalist mode of production.
