The US citizenship oath is a pretty amazing thing to read when you become a citizen of the United States. It goes on to say how we will be at service of our country and renounce all loyalty to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty. Is that kind of talk about allegiance and all that rejecting a former loyalty? Is that how we should think about what it means to become a Christian? Yes. The number one formal loyalty that we could be naive about is to the self, right? And so I do need to take seriously in terms of thinking about our allegiance to King Jesus and renouncing loyalties to other powers, but even to the power of the self's
