The Chicago Atomic Pile

Chicago pile one is essentially farmi an's alarge scheme to use carbon as a moderator to slow down neutrons so that a chain reaction could be achieved. Under normal circumstances, most of the neutrons produced invision escape into the air or ored by matter before they have a chance to act as uranium splitters. So farmian salard decided to build an atomic pile made of uranium and very pure graphite in stacks. It had to be they didn't know how big really when they started. The pile in chicago is built under an abandoned football stadium in a squash court in the centre of one of america's biggest cities.
