There was a tendency to be nostalgic about the authentic international socialist tradition from which we had come. It became a very anxious time because at the time you'll remember this was the beginning of what they called woke politics. We're also quite worried about some of the violence of the superego functions involved in 'woke' politics. For me, a sense of my identity falling apart. I didn't know who I was. Didn't know I should be. But it just seemed that since sexuality and sex and broader questions about identity and group formation were so essential to what we were going through I needed some orientation towards psychoanalysis.
