Demetrius: What we wanted to do was highlight what we saw as the dominant narrative theme and thread that holds together all of the stories in Genesis 1 through 11. And so we just focused like a laser on that. In regards to the serpent, I understand that in the ancient Near Eastern context the serpent could have been recognized as the chaos monster. But if the recently freed Israelite slaves are the first audience for the story then I think it would be fair to say that Egypt is their immediate context.
