A Young Rongvai - A Japanese Name
As much as a young Rongvai enjoyed learning, family finances meant he had to get a job rather than go to high school. He worked as an office boy at the Minami Nippon Steamship Company in Jilong. His job enabled him to pay for his classes and also help with family expenses. Life was tough and food was scarce. Staples like rice were rationed, and this was done on a kind of class system. The Japanese households were the A-class and received the biggest rations. And then there was Category C, ordinary Taiwanese families who received the least.
