The Origins of Shasta Legends

The clamath groups tell a creation story of a sky spirit named skell who came from heaven to reside within the mountai. The modock tells stories of the mada kagmi, more colloquially known as bigfoot, who is the protector of the woods. Many of these legends were recorded by a man named wakin miller, an early voice for narrative american rites. He published these widely read accounts in the 18 seventies, a decade or two before the white european legends materialized.
