Dishwasher Deturgent Can and Will Corrode Metal
Dishwasher detergent can and will corrode metal. The exact reason for this depends on the type of knife you're dealing with. Stainless steel is stainless because of a protective layer of cromium. Seramic knives are delicate, and they can chip and break if they get knocked around. If the heat in collisions, don't dull them. That's about the worst thing you can do.
