Hawkins - The Idea of Reference Frames in a Thousand Brains
Hawkins argues that the use of what he calls reference frames is very old from an evolutionary standpoint. Experiments with rats have shown that the combination of grid cells and place cells in their hippocampus allow them to know where they are in a room as well as where objects are relative to their body or more specifically their heads.
