In the 6th century BC, Carthage had control over all Phoenician colonies in the western Mediterranean. This was a catalyst for their rise to super power in the 6th Century BC. It seems that Carthage's newfound imperialistic policies may have arisen in response to similar actions being taken by the Greeks,. Their presence posed a significant economic threat to Carthage but encroaching on their trade routes wasn't the only threat.
