Is There a Rational Instinct in Your Brain?
In traditional philosophical pictures of the brain that oppose rationality and emotion, the rational part should always be aware of what's happening. And you see in a figure like nica, this attempt to overthrow that structure, or at least challenge it, by talking about how the rational part is put in service of the morals or culture. Nicha says he's still accepting that framework, but he's saying you have to be willing to recognize how your rationality, or how your will, is being controlled and determined. To overcome that and welcome and accept those appetitive parts of your soul seems so radically different.
