Introduction

China is one of the most important countries developing and shaping Advanced Artificial Intelligence or AI. The Chinese government's spending on AI research and development is estimated to be on the same order of magnitude as that of the US government. We think working on AI safety and governance in China, and building mutual understanding between Chinese and Western actors could have a positive social impact. There are arguments in favor of and against pursuing this career path. On the one hand, effective coordination is imperative for avoiding dangerous conflicts and racing dynamics. But there are major risks and complexities involved in this path.
