The Enclosure of Different Social Spheres
The growth of capitalism in the rural economy created much social polarization, as we've noted. The middling sort wanted to carve out a space for themselves. They were distinctive, but also saw themselves as becoming part of the gentility. So the extra space and division of houses allowed a greater separation to start between master and servant which had never been there before.
