Lucy's Conversion to Pipe Carriers
Hilda Nihart said that Lucy converted to pipe carrierdom. I evaluate inflaming rainbow as simply an advertisement for John Nihart's book. Black Elk's elderly daughter had no familiarity with pipe usage, and she needed instruction from others on how a pipe should be held. Ironically, whatever appreciation Lucy had for the Lakota pipe tradition was partly attributable to me. Because of my reverence for the tradition, Lucy had her son make a pipe for me.
