Dorothy Elsayer was a single woman working in an advertising agency. Her novels were financially successful and made her independent. She also wrote religious plays which became so popular the train company had to lay on more trains for people who wanted to see them live. And then through to quite erudite essays and a book on the Trinity that she wrote called The Mind and Make It.
