This is the first time in Luke that Jesus refers to himself as Christ. The word for atonement in the Hebrew Bible is translated from a Hebrew word kafar, which means to cover. So the very first thing God does for Adam and Eve after the fall is he makes them coats of skins because they have a fake covering on. They're going home. We thought he was going to redeem Israel. He didn't. And Jesus is teaching them from the scriptures that this in fact had to happen. It should have happened. Needed to happen.
