Joseph Smith made money and got fame by convincing people that he had special powers to find hidden treasure in the earth using his stone in a hat. By 1826, 1827, he's starting to run afoul of the law and he needs a new gig. And so what he does is he pivots, he's got now the ability to convince people that he has special powers,. But then he won upset by saying, not only do I have special powers to found hidden things in the ground, I havespecial powers to translate ancient languages.
