Comedy Equals Tragedy Plus Time
Comedy is like the intersection between something that is benign and something that is a violation. You're in an awful situation and quite a lot of situational humor can be very funny. Something that is happening far away can be a lot funnier, keeping the nasty bits out of the view of the audience so that you can laugh at the circumstances around them.
