Victor Hugo was determined to save Notre Dame and in 1831 published a novel about Quasimodo, the Bellringer. He dreamed of no other heteros than the painted windows always in flower. That nostalgia for the cathedral particular sparked interest in the 1830s for restoring Notre Dame. The irony there is that the constant restoration of that particular cathedral built upon this nostalgic romantic impulse actually increases the risk of fire.
