S.R.W. also notes that many spell books contain symbols or abbreviations mixed in with actual rituals, which make confuse historians and people that are not really in the know. The purpose of these apparently was to act as a sort of code in shorthand. If you didn't know the coded language, you couldn't complete the rituals making the book essentially useless. But again, most of the time I feel that just dedicating something to a specific purpose is enough.
