In the nineteenth century, a growing group of intellectuals started seeing islam as the source of the empire's problems. After turkey was on the losing side in world war one, very touchand go situation. The leading hero was mustavacemal atatuk who had fought the british in gallipoli. And he sensed that they had a huge amount of political capital to modernize the country and to do something that was unthinkable until that point.
