Gift-Giving in Philanthropy
Gerard Drog: The dominant logic of gift-giving was often about spirit and not appetite. He says in tribal culture, great chiefs gave away their most precious possessions to show contempt for wealth. In modern philanthropy, people will put their names on a building but feel pride when they see it, he says. "What they get from that is so often them not giving to the university but them giving to themselves"
