Montaigne thought most sweeping generalizations that people tried to make in science, medicine and law were not useful. He didn't write much about metaphysics because we lack the ability to truly know based on experience. By reserving judgment about eve rything around us, we prevent ourselves from making negative judgments that might ail us in some way. There's an exception to the rule theories will continually be accepted as truth and then disproven by another theory. And that process is going to go on forever.
