The Dangers of Stochastic Parrots
Bender co-wrote a paper on the danger of stochastic parrots. Large language models are programs for taking enormous amounts of text and processing them so that with some new text they can make guesses about what word is likely to come next. There's no understanding, but it's really good at mimicking what looks like human produced text.
