It's increasingly likely that the dark sector could be made of many different types of massive particle, light particle, or even dark radiation as well. This is why it's maybe so tricky to come up with a clear signal for any one of them because they're all mashed in there. That is very much my suspicion and it might explain to an extent why we haven't seen anything.
