I'm adapting Anne Patchett's book called The Magicians' Assistant. I read this way back in the 90s when she wrote it and it stuck with me ever since. My first drafts of adapting either one of my plays or someone's novel are very self-consciously trying to capture the original material. And you can't do that with film. Novels, especially novels like Anne's, which the plots are very soft.
