Vera was on an expedition to find woolly mammoths. She found mercury in the ground of latrines where they were pit stopping along the way. Mercury doesn't degrade, so she's been looking for high levels and finding them. Some 200 years later, their po mercury is still sitting there in the grounds. It's not the only trace they've left - syphilis was a massive problem too.
