Britain and spain would soon be at war anyway, so the british leadership decided to start hostilities on their terms with a bang. The government was furiously preparing the possibility of a french invasion. Work had begun on the royal military canal, a massive artificial waterway that would provide a second line of fence around the likeliest invasion beaches in southeastern england. In past episodes we've discussed the part time soldiers who were serving in various british militia units during this period. There were perhaps as many as half a million of them.
