The institution of marriage has been incredibly relevant to humans historically. In most mammal species, you've got a few males who kind of dominate the mating market and account for the vast majority of all the matings and all the offspring. But humans are kind of different, cause it looks like about three to four million years ago, we started forming these longer term parbonds.
