The Utility of Utilitarianism
For Bentham, the great utility of utilitarianism was not just because it allowed him to systematize and come up with endless lists and schemes and numbers. He wanted people to pose the question: why justify it to me? One way to think about Bentham art utilitarianism I've always felt is that it's a kind of acid. It is designed to burn through the crap. And he had that image in mind to cleaning out your G in stables - all the accumulated detritus and nonsense of the centuries around human institutions.
