The engineering manager role has different incarnations depending on who you talk to, which company you're referring to and so on like it. In my world, that definition is very specific and that is that it involves supporting the engineers and the engineering department. The way that we approach this is through the manager and lead and technical director. They form the leadership structure of the engineering team itself. We also have the concept of sub leads and other things like that.
