The Second Coming of Christ
There was also widespread belief in in a possible coming apocalypse and the second coming of christ. Many people believed that they were helping to pave the way for this second coming if they, if jerusalem were in christian hands, then it would be possible for christ to make his return. And lastly, there was the underlying political fact that, a, there was still occasional internacine warfare in western europe. The pope wanted to pacify these conflicts and to create a more consolidated, more harmonious western christian civilization with the pope as supreme leader.
