The main thing Tocqueville was concerned about for a possible future civil war was a long race-based line. He would not be surprised that even in 2021, this is something that is of great concern and great political debate today. When he concludes the book in 1840, he says, if I thought everything was hopeless, I wouldn't have bothered to write this book. The very fact that he thought it was worth writing this book meant that he didn't think that fate was sealed.
